Plateau State Polytechnic gutted by fire, school shut

The Jos campus of Plateau state polytechnic has been seriously damaged by fire. The fire outbreak which occurred at the early hours of today, left the students hostel burnt and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.

An eye witness, who spoke to www.communitystories.ng  but do not want her identity to be disclosed, revealed that the incidence was caused by gas explosion in the female hostel. “The fire started at about 9:am this morning while some students were in their classes having lectures. When they head  some students screaming fire, fire fire, then some male students and security men ran to salvage the situation by pouring water and sand. Before the arrival of fire fighters from the Fire service, the fire had already destroyed some parts of the hostel.

Some victims of the incidents recounted their loss, which included “documents, clothes, phones, bags, food items and money. Speaking to newsmen, the Rector of the institution, Mr. Dauda Gyemany disclosed that the real cause of the fire outbreak has not been ascertained and that the men of the Fire Service and some other agencies are doing their best to make sure that the ugly incident does not occur again in the polytechnic.

The management of the institution have declared a one week break for the students, to enable them go home and put themselves together before resumption of academic activities. Similarly, the chairman, Plateau state House of Assembly Committee on information, who represents Mangu constituency, Hon. Yanga who visited the the institution. He commiserated with the students of the institution, and pleaded with them to be calm and that the state government will address the issue.
